About this site

The Spyway Inn is a 300 year old country pub with a holiday apartment at Askerswell, near Bridport in west Dorset, and it is not a campsite: the operator's own website offers no tent or touring pitches at all. What The Spyway Inn does run is free campervan stopovers. Self contained campervans are welcome by advance booking, with no charge to stay, on the understanding that you dine in the restaurant. That is the whole arrangement, so anyone after a shower block, electric hook up, a tent pitch or a week on a pitch needs to look elsewhere in Dorset. The pub sits at the base of Eggardon Hill, a couple of minutes from the A35, with Bridport, West Bay and the Jurassic Coast a short cross country drive away. The gardens hold six covered pods for private dining and a summer house seating 24, with views over rolling hills, live music on Saturday evenings through summer, and cooking over fire in the garden kitchen when the weather allows. Well behaved dogs are welcome throughout. If you want a bed rather than a van, the apartment above the restaurant has a king bed, lounge and kitchenette from £150 a night on two to four night Wednesday to Sunday stays. The kitchen serves Wednesday to Sunday, so book a table before you point the van at Askerswell.

Where you'll be

The Spyway Inn

Good to know

Does The Spyway Inn have a campsite?
No, The Spyway Inn does not offer camping. Its own website lists no tent pitches, no touring caravan pitches and no camping facilities of any kind. The only overnight options are self contained campervan stopovers for diners and a self catering holiday apartment above the restaurant.
Can I stay overnight in a campervan at The Spyway Inn?
Yes, self contained campervans are welcome, but booking in advance is essential and the arrangement only applies to vans that need no facilities. The pub asks that you dine in the restaurant as the condition of staying, so reserve a table at the same time as your spot.
How much does a campervan stopover cost?
No, there is no pitch fee. The Spyway Inn states plainly that it does not charge campervans to stay, and asks only that guests eat in the restaurant. Booking ahead is essential, so ring 07930 169347 or email thespywayinn@outlook.com rather than turning up on spec.
Are dogs welcome at The Spyway Inn?
Yes, the pub states that well behaved dogs are welcome throughout, with treats available from the jar and a seat by the fire after a walk. Askerswell sits among plenty of local footpaths, and Eggardon Hill is right on the doorstep for a proper leg stretch.
Is there other accommodation at the Spyway Inn near Bridport?
Yes, a newly renovated self contained holiday apartment sits above the restaurant, with a king bed, a lounge with smart TV, a dining area, a kitchenette and an ensuite bathroom. Stays of two to four nights run Wednesday to Sunday from £150 a night, with a local breakfast hamper on arrival.
When is the kitchen open at The Spyway Inn?
The country kitchen and gardens serve Wednesday and Thursday 6pm to 9pm, Friday 5.30pm to 9pm, Saturday noon to 9pm and Sunday noon to 4pm. There is no service Monday or Tuesday. Since campervan stays depend on dining, check these hours before you book a stopover.
